How a shared vision between Southern Aluminum and Southern Arkansas University is shaping the future of engineering, manufacturing, and regional economic development

That philosophy has become more than just an aspiration for Southern Aluminum; it has become a guiding principle behind one of the region's most successful collaborations with higher education. Since the summer of 2023, Southern Aluminum and Southern Arkansas University's engineering program have been working together to create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom and the manufacturing floor. What began as conversations about engineering internships has evolved into a comprehensive partnership that is developing future engineers, advancing manufacturing innovation, and strengthening the workforce throughout South Arkansas.
Located less than 1.5 miles apart in Magnolia, the two organizations have demonstrated that meaningful partnerships are built not on proximity alone, but on a shared commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and investing in people. Unlike traditional university-industry collaborations that often focus on a single internship or research project, the Southern Aluminum–SAU partnership was intentionally designed around a continuous improvement philosophy. The partnership continues to grow through three interconnected pillars: a customized year-round internship program, applied industry-sponsored research, and the dissemination of knowledge through professional presentations and publications.

That vision has produced remarkable results in a relatively short period of time. Since the partnership began, more than 27 engineering students have participated in customized internships and industry-sponsored engineering projects at Southern Aluminum. Students have addressed real manufacturing challenges involving Lean Manufacturing, 5S implementation, process optimization, Standard Work Instructions, product quality improvement, facility layout optimization, Overall Equipment Effectiveness, sustainability initiatives, durability testing, and advanced manufacturing technologies. Rather than completing hypothetical classroom assignments, students have worked directly alongside Southern Aluminum engineers and manufacturing professionals to collect production data, analyze processes, develop engineering solutions, and present recommendations that contribute to continuous improvement efforts throughout the company. As the internship program matured, the partnership naturally expanded into applied research. Faculty and students began investigating engineering questions directly connected to Southern Aluminum's manufacturing operations. Research projects have explored topics such as adhesive performance, product durability, sustainability, quality improvement, and engineering documentation. These projects not only provide practical solutions for industry but also offer students an opportunity to participate in research with immediate real-world relevance. While the project began as an educational exercise, its findings identified an opportunity with the potential to improve manufacturing consistency and strengthen product performance. One of the most significant successes came when an engineering project prompted Southern Aluminum to evaluate and ultimately pursue new manufacturing equipment and process improvements aimed at enhancing product quality. The outcome illustrates the value of combining fresh engineering perspectives with industry expertise, demonstrating that student innovation can influence strategic business decisions while delivering tangible value to manufacturing operations. The impact extends well beyond student learning. Several internship participants have transitioned into full-time engineering positions, strengthening Southern Aluminum's workforce while demonstrating the value of developing engineering talent locally.
"One of the most rewarding aspects of this partnership has been watching students tackle real manufacturing challenges with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas," said Jon Mark Quillin, Continuous Improvement Leader at Southern Aluminum. "The projects have provided value to our operations while giving students experiences they simply can't gain in a classroom. It's a true win-win for both organizations."
The newest dimension of the partnership focuses on sharing these successes with the broader engineering community. Student and faculty research has been presented at statewide events such as Arkansas STEM Posters at the Capitol and at national and international conferences. During these presentations, the discussion often extends beyond engineering research to highlight the partnership itself as a model for workforce development and regional collaboration. Recognizing the value of this work, Southern Aluminum recently approved financial support to help SAU faculty and students present their collaborative research at the IEOM International Conference. While the contribution will assist with travel expenses, company leadership views it as an investment in something much larger.
